dolores - bohren & der club of gore
a friend included this album, as part of his "10 albums you have to listen to" speech when i asked him to recommend some music to me. i was expecting this to be somewhat imprudent and occult, but instead i was pleasantly surprised to hear something that would finally knock me out, rather than making me want to knock everything else out like my usual tumultuous, dark preference to music. i'm not sure whether or not i'd like to make this a full review of the album, because it's something i've not executed in a while but it has actually touched me, and made everything i do stagnant and heavy while listening - as if i've been set to move to the tempo of each song. if you've ever spent a long time underwater, or smoked weed until the ceiling was laughing at you, it's the sounds you tend to hear in your own head. gradual, progressive sounds swimming into nothing with a hint of "shit, i'm passed out in an elevator" mixed in. saxophone melts deliciously into the hypnotising waves of sound and each song carries its own mood. for me the album seems to deepen with each track -almost like the sleeping process. "staub" - the first song is almost misleading to the rest of the album, with almost no movement whatsoever but sublimely and seamlessly moves into the last track "welten" (which i had to replay in the morning when i awoke, after passing out before the album had even finished)! in my opinion, this is the best "chillout" album i've ever came across, and i'll gladly take my friends opinions into account more often when he's recommending music to me.
i think writing even this little overview has put me in the mood to start reviewing and interviewing again - and i'll be putting some of my work back up on my live journal/myspace and maybe in here, although i see this as a more personal blog where i don't have to worry about general palaver and good vocabulary!
